Canal Commons
East House’s Canal Commons is a 123-unit building, which has 70 apartments designated for people with mental health disorder, substance use disorder or chronic homelessness. Canal Commons is a housing first model. East House staff will provide trauma informed care and harm reduction practices to meet individuals where they are on their journey of recovery. These services will keep clients engaged and continuing to move their lives forward.
We are presently accepting applications for the 70 units. To qualify, individuals must meet the homeless criteria as defined by Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative (ESSHI). Once homeless criteria is met, individuals must meet one of three additional criteria:
Have a diagnosed history of Severe Mental Illness (SMI), or
Have a diagnosed history of Substance Use Disorder (SUD), or
Have a history of Chronic Homelessness (CH)
We have the following number of units assigned:
Individuals with Severe Mental Illness: 37 units
Individuals with Substance Use Disorder: 25 units
Individuals with Chronic Homelessness: 8 units
Income Eligibility: No minimum income is required. The program will provide housing first options for individuals who need a rental subsidy and supports to live independently in the community.
